Managing IIS

Once you have IIS installed and configured correctly, it normally requires little in the way of routine administration tasks. The following sections provide an overview of some of the administrative tasks you may have occasion to perform. They do not cover monitoring and optimizing IIS performance, which are beyond the scope of this chapter. For information about how to tune your server, refer to the IIS documentation.

Managing IIS Remotely

In addition to using ISM locally to manage the server running IIS, you can also use ISM to manage the IIS server remotely from another computer on the local network or across the Internet. You can also use the HTML version of ISM to manage the IIS4 server remotely from another computer on the local network or across the Internet.

Managing IIS remotely with ISM

You can install ISM on any computer on your network that runs Windows NT 4.0 (Server or Workstation) and use it to manage IIS servers located anywhere on the network. To install ISM, first make sure that SP3 or higher and Internet Explorer 4.01 or higher is installed on the Windows NT client. Then run Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack Setup and select only the ISM option for installation.

Once you have installed ISM on the client, you can manage remote IIS servers by running ISM and clicking the computer icon on the toolbar to specify the IIS server you want to manage.
