Installing the DNS Server

Install the Microsoft DNS Server service from the Network Services page of the Network property sheet (Control Panel Network Services tab). Select Add to display the Select Network Service dialog and highlight Microsoft DNS Server for installation.

Windows NT displays the Windows NT Setup dialog to prompt for the location of the distribution files; accept the default or specify a new location as appropriate. NT copies the distribution files and returns to the Network property sheet, which now shows the Microsoft DNS Server as an installed service. When you close the installation dialog, the system configures, stores, and reviews the bindings. Restart your computer to activate the DNS server.

Windows NT Server configures the DNS Server service to start each time the system is booted. Use the Services applet in Control Panel to modify the startup settings for the DNS Server service, or to start, stop, pause, or continue the service. You can also control the DNS Server service from the command prompt, using the commands net start dns, net stop dns, net pause dns, and net continue dns.

At this point, the DNS server software is installed but it has not yet been configured. Use DNS Manager to configure and manage the DNS server.
