Installing IIS

Installing IIS4 is a relatively straightforward (albeit time consuming) multi-step process. After you obtain the IIS4 distribution files and prepare your server, you install Internet Explorer 4.01 or higher and then run IIS4 Setup. Because installing IIS4 may require unloading services that may be needed by users and because it requires at least two system restarts, you may want to schedule the installation outside normal working hours unless you are installing IIS4 on a dedicated server. The remainder of this section details the steps necessary to install IIS4.

Obtaining Distribution Files

Installing IIS4 on a stock Windows NT Server 4.0 computer requires three sets of distribution files. Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 or later and Internet Explorer 4.01 or later must be installed on the computer before you can install the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack. IE4 requires SP3, and includes numerous dynamic link library files that provide various functions (i.e. the Microsoft Management Console) that are required by IIS4. You can obtain these distribution files by ordering them on CD-ROM from Microsoft, or by downloading them from the Microsoft Web site at the addresses shown.
