So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Building a theme from the ground up
The main advantage of building a theme from the ground up is the massive educational value of this path. When you're developing a theme from scratch, you're learning the basics of theme construction and function. This kind of knowledge goes a long way for your future projects in WordPress.
On the other hand, it's also the longest of the three paths. In a professional production environment (among people designing and developing themes as a profession), creating themes from scratch is a highly time-consuming approach, making it quite ineffective.
