There are dozens of social networks out there, but the biggest ones tend to be really, really big. That’s because of something called the network effect: you go where the people you want to connect with are. So, beyond a certain size, the big sites keep getting bigger while smaller rivals with lesser network effects find it hard to catch up. However, what is big today might not be big tomorrow. For example, in late 2016 the short-video social network Vine had over 200 monthly active users; in January 2017 its owner, Twitter, shut it down.
