Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are a type of neural network that generate synthetic data. They were created in 2014 by Ian Goodfellow and his colleagues. They can be used to generate photographs of people that have never existed. More importantly, they are used to generate synthetic data to augment training datasets.
