Buffer
A buffer expands a geometry object by a specified amount. If it is a LineString, a buffer will create a polygon in the shape of the LineString expanded on both the sides by the buffer amount. To illustrate this, the following screenshot shows a closeup of the US Interstate system near Chicago with a buffer of 1 km:
