It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Computer interfacing
(a) use a shift register to perform the serial/parallel
or parallel/serial conversion,
(b) select the required Baud rate, number of data bits
and stop bits,
(c) establish the procedure to be adopted in the event
of an error being detected,
(d) signal the state of the input or output buffer, that
