Stepper motor principles
There are three common types:
(a) variable reluctance motor,
(b) permanent magnet motor,
(c) hybrid motor.
The variable reluctance motor
This type (Figure 8.8) has a soft iron core with project-
ing teeth at precise angular intervals. The stator has
inward projecting teeth but there are more of them so
that, when two rotor teeth align with two stator teeth all
the rest are misaligned (by an angle of 15° in the exam-
ple shown). The stator teeth have coils wound on them,
which can magnetise them if d.c. is passed through them.
