Chapter 17

Digital Drawing Exercise One: Basic Digital Drawing

This exercise uses Adobe Photoshop as a sketching tool to make a monochromatic chalk drawing. The goal of this exercise to is to learn basic drawing set-up and to experience a variety of drawing tools called brushes. It requires a photo of the subject to be drawn. I recommend a simple object like an apple. You will need to know how to change colors and brushes with Photoshop to work this exercise.

Step One—Set the photo of your apple, or an apple close to you so you can refer to it while drawing.

Step Two—Open a new Photoshop file using the NEW command. Make a document 5 × 5 inches at a resolution of 300 PPI as shown in Figure 17.1. Make sure the MODE is set to GRAYSCALE.
