Digital Drawing Exercise Two: Basic Digital Painting

This exercise asks the artist to make a painting on a blank canvas. It requires only the computer and software. You should have a working knowledge of trompe l’oeil painting techniques or how light describes physical objects. You should also have a basic understanding of how selections work in Photoshop, how to select colors and brushes, and the basic use of the gradient tool. This exercise will also describe how layers are used in painting.

Step One—Open a new Photoshop document 6 × 8 inches large at 300 PPI with a white background. Make sure it is in the RGB mode. Save the drawing with a name you like.
