open to innovation and novelty, intuitively, they are more willing to support
entrepreneurs by investing in VC and crowdfunding.
Additionally, we found a moderating eect of linguistic heterogeneity on
the relationship between language FTR and VC investment. Contrary to our
prediction, we found that linguistic heterogeneity had a complementary eect
on the negative association between FTR and VC. On average, we found that
weak-FTR counties invest 40.5 euros per capita more annually than strong-
FTR countries. This gap is amplified in countries characterised by high lin-
guistic heterogeneity, leading to a dierence of 80 euros per capita. A possible
explanation for this unexpected eect is discussed below.
