Distributing Site Templates

Custom templates that are based on built-in templates can be saved as .stp files and uploaded to other servers running SharePoint services as described in "Creating Custom Site Templates."

New, predefined templates created through site definitions can be copied to the Templates folder of other SharePoint servers as described in the section "Customizing Site Definitions" earlier in this chapter. Be sure to copy both the folder containing the site definition (for example, .\1033\DotSite) and the WebTemp*.xml file in the .\1033\XML folder that loads the definition in SharePoint. Finally, remember to restart SharePoint after the definitions are installed.

Custom templates can also be based on templates from custom site definitions. In this situation, you need to install both the site definition and the custom template on the SharePoint server.
