Chapter 11
Choosing Type and Creating a System
IN THIS CHAPTER
Using your typography to establish purpose, tone, and message
Creating a typographic system and choosing good typefaces
Avoiding typographic faux pas
We’ve talked about typography a bit already, but the purpose of this chapter is to dive a little deeper and demystify how to choose a good typeface. If you polled ten designers on how they choose their typefaces, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if you received ten different answers.
Making good decisions about your typography can help make a good design solution a great design solution, but the reverse can also be true. Poor typographic decisions can weaken a good design solution. Like it or not, your typographic choices can either buttress your design solutions or diminish them.
Your typographic decisions can impact:
- The message of your design solution
- The brand identity of your design solution
- The ability to create a visual hierarchy
- The aesthetics of your design solution
- The legibility of your written text
- The emotion and tone of your design solution
- The functionality of your design solution
