Born in Japan in 1928, Yoji Akao graduated in 1940 and received his Ph.D. in 1964 from the Tokyo Institute of Technology’s Department of Ceramics. He is currently chairman and professor at Tamagawa University’s Department of Industrial Engineering. His fields of study include quality control and statistical engineering.
He serves as vice president of the Japanese Society for Quality Control, a member of the Deming Prize Committee (1964-), vice director of the JUSE editorial committee for the Journal of Statistical Quality Control, and vice councillor in the head office of QC Circles (1973-).
