Six Sigma was developed in an environment of extreme competition in new industries, poor economic conditions, and where survival was at stake. Seeds of Six Sigma were sowed in 1981 by the leadership of Motorola when they decided to do some thing different in order to continue to stay in business profitably. Continuing on the success of process improvement efforts in 1986, the leadership team decided to accelerate improvement through employee participation.
