Exporting

Clearly, “Easy come, easy go” doesn’t always apply to photos.

After I upgraded iPhoto to the latest version, my Export button became disabled.

This problem is usually caused by outdated plug-ins. If you have any older plug-ins, such as an outdated version of the Toast Titanium export plug-in, disable it and then relaunch iPhoto to see whether that solves the problem.

Here’s how to turn your plug-ins on or off:

  1. Quit iPhoto.

    Return to the Finder.

  2. Highlight the iPhoto application icon. Choose File → Get Info.

You may have seen the Get Info box for other files in your day, but you probably haven’t seen a Plugins panel (Figure A-2).

  3. Click the triangle to expand the Plugins panel.

A complete list of the plug-ins you currently have loaded appears with a checkbox next to each item.

  4. Turn off the non-Apple plug-ins that you suspect might be causing the problem.

Now open iPhoto and test the export function. If the technology gods are smiling, the function should work now. All that’s left is to figure out which one of the plug-ins was causing your headaches.

To find out, quit iPhoto. In the Finder, open its Get Info window again. Reinstate your plug-ins one by one, using the on/off switches depicted in Figure A-2, until you find the offending software.

Once you locate the culprit, highlight its name and then click Remove. (You may also want to check the Web site of the offending plug-in for an updated version.)

Tip

Here’s another, somewhat more interesting way to remove a plug-in. Control-click ...
