12.14. Windows .NET
Although still in beta, the Windows .NET Server line promises to improve on the many significant improvements Microsoft made with Windows 2000 Server. Don't get confused. There is a difference between .NET servers and .NET in general, with the latter really referring to a software platform and the various pieces (.NET servers, Passport, and XML) that support it. As for the server operating system, Microsoft plans to release four versions:

This new product has been streamlined to focus on web hosting and e-commerce applications. From a security perspective, this is a proper approach that comes from a philosophy of enabling only the minimum functionality required to perform a task.
