Starting with Windows Server 2016, Microsoft introduced the cluster OS rolling upgrade feature, which is used to upgrade the cluster nodes' operating system, from Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2016, and from Windows Server 2016 to Windows Server 2019 without stopping the Hyper-V or SOFS workloads. The cluster OS rolling upgrade ensures protection is not interrupted during OS upgrades. System Center 2016 Data Protection Manager or later continues to protect VMs during the upgrade, maintaining the backup service level agreement (SLA).
