2.3.1 Standard Work

The rst principle of lean management is that all activity—

whether clinical or administrative—is governed by means

of standard work. Standard work is dened as standardized

tasks performed in a standardized sequence in a standardized

amount of time and with a standardized amount of medicines,

supplies, and equipment to support it. Standard work has two

functions. First, it reduces variation by bringing processes into
