Given the string edit distance function, the design of a recogniser

system can be achieved by constructing a repository of sample strings,

or references, for each class of sketches during a user-speciﬁc training

phase. During recognition, the signals from the digitiser tablet are

again transformed into strings of directional codes and then compared

to all references. The unknown sketch is then assigned to its closest

match by a nearest neighbour classiﬁcator. To avoid false-positives,

a minimum threshold can be introduced for class assignment.
