more to systems than the reverse. Active adaptation technology for
diverse users is necessary before achieving their full potential sup-
porting universal access, education and other critical emerging areas.
As adaptive systems become more common and increase in utility
and sophistication, one long-term research agenda will be the devel-
opment of mutually adaptive multimodal interfaces in which both
user and system actions converge with one another – as does natural
interpersonal interaction.
