One of the more interesting image tricks to have appeared online in recent years is the split-depth gif. These are simple animated images, using three panes, that create a surprising three-dimensional effect on ordinary screens. For example, in one of the more effective split-depth gifs, a cartoon dog runs from left to right, moving from one pane to the next, then appears to run outside the right pane, around the white frame, over some text under the image, before darting back into another pane.
