6Site and Equipment Grounding

6.1 Requirements

The grounding system must provide reliable and safe means of equipment grounding in order to

  • Provide a low resistance path for the dissipation of ground fault currents, lightning, and switching surges into the earth without exceeding any operating and equipment limits.
  • Minimize the ground potential rise (GPR) between the equipment and the soil within safe limits throughout the site for the protection of the operating personnel and equipment.
  • Provide a reasonably uniform potential rise in all parts of the plant to minimize the step and touch potentials throughout the plant for the protection of the plant personnel.
  • Properly channel the ground fault and unbalanced currents to reduce electrical noise in the communication and data cables. ...
