7.1 The Big Picture
Lighting? That cannot be that tough, right? Everybody knows to change a light bulb or replace a fuse. I had a friend at our university who graduated as an engineer in lighting. I wondered, but never asked him, why he went to all that trouble of attending University to specialize in lighting?
I have met many good designers who were doing lighting, but also those who struggled and had absolutely not a clue how to do it. Well, they knew how to design lighting for a room but had a problem with the plant. They were just “not seeing the forest for the trees.” It was not their skill that was missing. They were just not trained to look at “the big picture.”
Well, it turns out that there is a lot to a good lighting design. Lighting is a skill and a specialty when it comes to special effects in architecture design. We will not go into that type of artistic specialty, but concentrate on the lighting practiced in industrial and power plants.
