10.7. MDX Functions
Analysis Services 2008 uses several MDX functions to facilitate data extraction from the UDM. The following table covers some of the MDX functions in Analysis Services 2008 and gives a brief description about their behavior for quick reference. Detailed information about these functions is provided in Appendix A (available online at www.wrox.com). We recommend you learn more about the MDX functions used in MDX scripts with scenarios in MDX Solutions: With SQL Server Analysis Services 2005 and Hyperion Essbase, Second Edition by George Spofford et al. (Wiley, 2006).

| Iif( <Condition>, <Then Expression> [Hint [Eager | Strict]], <Else expression> [hint [Eager | Strict]]) | Two query hints have been added as optional parameters to this function for 2008. The Hint Eager hint instructs Analysis Services to evaluate the expression for both branches of the expression. Conversely, Hint Strict instructs Analysis Services to only identify the cube space corresponding to each branch of the expression and only evaluate a given branch where needed. These hints are useful in a minority of cases where the Analysis Services engine does not automatically select the best option. |
| MeasureGroupMeasures (<Measure Group Name>) | This function retrieves all the measures within a specific measure group. Because the UDM can contain several measure groups, this function helps by making the query more specific. |
