Evolution of Project Communications

Communication has been considered a project management knowledge area in every version of professional standards published by the Project Management Institute (PMI). As the standards have evolved, the approach to communication has broadened from a process-oriented, information-dissemination function, to a holistic, purposeful means to engage and satisfy stakeholders.

The chart in Figure A.1 provides a high-level overview of the changes in the Project Communications Management Knowledge Area in A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) from the first edition published in 1996 through to the current sixth edition published in 2017.
