Term frequency, or tf(w, d), is the number of times a word w appears in the document d. If we look at our example:
tf(dog, sentence 1) = 1
Sometimes the term frequency is normalized by the length of the document. If we normalize it in our example case, then:
tf(dog, sentence) = 1/3
The denominator is the number of words in sentence 1.
