The C-I-A Triad

When it comes to security, there are three fundamental concepts. You may sometimes hear these referred to as C-I-A, the C-I-A triad, the A-I-C triad (to distinguish it from the U.S. intelligence agency), or maybe just the triad. The three concepts are as follows:

• Confidentiality—Keeping secrets is the essence of confidentiality. If someone says something to you in a crowded room, you won’t be assured of much in the way of confidentiality because it would be very easy for someone to overhear what the two of you are saying.
