If you have to administer connections from telephone modems, the standard used is the Remote Authentication Dial In User Service (RADIUS). The open source implementation of this software is based on the work of the FreeRADIUS project, available from http://freeradius.org/. The implementation of a RADIUS server, including FreeRADIUS, will not be covered here.
