Time services on Linux rely on the NTP protocol. This section describes those directives in the /etc/ntp.conf file that can help secure a local NTP server. This is based on using an Ubuntu system with the openntpd package. Red Hat systems don’t have the openntpd as a package. Instead, Red Hat systems use the chrony package to provide NTP services. If an NTP server is overloaded in any way, it may not be a security issue per se. However, because it affects the reliability of the time seen from that server, it can have other consequences. One common reason to have the same NTP server across all your systems is to make sure all your logs have the same time, which can make event correlation a lot easier.
