Object Security Functionality
There are six securable object types within SharePoint where you can assign rights to users and/or groups: sites, lists, libraries, folders, documents, and items. The following describes how rights can be assigned at each of these levels to achieve your desired level of security and control over the content of your site.
Site-Level Permissions
Site-level permissions provide the basis for access to every other object on your site. They determine who can access the front page of your site and what level of access they have to the site. By default, all content on your site inherits permissions from the site level.
Configuring site level permissions
To configure site level permissions, on the front page of your site, click Site Actions, and then Site Settings.
Under "Users and Permissions," you will see three items: "People and Groups," "Site collection administrators," and "Advanced permissions" (Figure 22-15).
