I have an arachnoid cyst in my brain. It’s a 6 cm void in my left temporal lobe where hearing discrimination and part of my memory is supposed to be. As a result, I can’t make out what people are saying when I’m in a crowd, and I can’t remember the stuff I want to remember (yet I can recall the license plate number of my first car).
I compensate for the first with a combination of lip-reading and laughing when other people laugh. For the second, I try to offload stuff to external devices: my daybook,[3] lists, calendars, notes on the fridge, and so on.
