Last week we had a thunderstorm, and some lightning struck our yard. It blew a few circuit breakers, but everything seemed to be OK…until I hit space and my Mac Mini didn’t wake up. It turned out that although the power side was protected by my UPS, I have a long, unshielded Ethernet cable, and that must have picked up enough induced voltage to fry both the computer and the switch at the other end.
I took the computer to get it fixed, then dug out my laptop, which I haven’t used for a while. I got it synced back to the state of the Mac Mini in about five minutes, including the new Vim configuration files, the changes I’d made to my terminal preferences, and all the repositories I’d been ...
