ソフトウェアアーキテクチャの基本的なアーキテクチャスタイルの1つに、パイプラインアーキテクチャがある（このスタイルは「パイプとフィルター」アーキテクチャとも呼ばれる）。このアーキテクチャスタイルは、開発者やアーキテクトが機能を個別のパーツに分割すると決めたときに誕生した。たいていの開発者は、Bash†1やZsh†2といったUnixターミナルシェル言語の背後にある基本原則として、このアーキテクチャに親しんでいる。
