While there is much excitement in the XML community regarding the power of XSLT, transformations are only one section of the Extensible Stylesheet Language, and another, very important, area of the Recommendation consists of XSL Formatting Objects, or XSL-FO.
XSL-FO exists to provide the mechanisms for applying presentation and style controls over structured XML documents. The functionality of XSL-FO is similar to that of Cascading Style Sheets; however, XSL-FO goes beyond the functionality provided by CSS, offering features such as page numbering, improved margins, footnotes, and a host of other features added to XSL-FO to deal with laying out complex documents.
