Having identified the entities of internal function, we can move to Question 5c of Table 5.1: “What is the functional architecture?” Answering this question requires understanding the relationships among the entities of function, which in Chapter 2 we calledwe shall call the interactions. This is the key step in analyzing architecture, because it is through the interaction of the internal functions that the externally delivered function emerges. The key idea is that the exchanged or shared operands are the functional interactions. The functions plus the functional interactions are the functional architecture.
