It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

The mandate of a board is to provide leadership—to make sure the organization is “climbing the right wall.” After serving on a few boards, I realized I had never seen any one of them take time to reflect and come up with a comprehensive plan expressing what their work was and how they were to go about it.
As in many other arenas, everyone assumed they knew what they were doing and that everyone else knew what they were doing. It is equally likely that they knew they did not know, but because everyone else was acting as if they knew (which they did not), they were afraid to say ...
