Chapter 6

Giving Appreciation

The Appreciative Pause–Sticky Note Plaudit

One of the most neglected behaviors in discussion is showing appreciation for contributions that have enhanced our understanding or led to new lines of questioning or thinking. We try to emphasize this in two ways. The Appreciative Pause usually happens during a discussion and the Sticky Note Plaudit at its conclusion.

Purposes

  • To build time for expressing appreciation for specific contributions throughout a discussion
  • To give people the experience of receiving respectful acknowledgment
  • To teach what people find most helpful, informative, or inspiring
  • To create greater goodwill and cohesion in a group
  • To encourage quieter members to feel they are valued
