Step C.Agree on operating principlesand norms

•   What it means:

—   Defining the illustrative norms and behaviors that put the values into action

•   How it works:

—   Translate each value into illustrative behaviors

—   Select three to five behaviors that best describe the ideal environment for your team

The Idea

Defining the values is a good first step, but it is also necessary to agree on a set of operating principles that enable the team to measure whether or not behaviors are consistent with the values.

Each value should have a list of approximately five “norms” that put the values into action. Norms are the accepted and rewarded behaviors of the team. Stated simply, norms are the “way we do things around here.”
