There are two big problems with micromanaging. First, it is unproductive. It takes up a lot of your time that should be spent on more important things. Second, it undermines the confidence of the person you’re micromanaging.

That said, there are times when you have to do it. New hires—even when you hire the best—have to be micromana­ged for a period of time. So do experienced employees when you ask them to do new work that only you understand.
