Outsourced Thinking
Our constant struggle to optimize often leads us to recognize the costs and difficulties of trying to know everything. So what do we do? We run headlong into the arms of experts, technologies, and protocols (or rules) that offer the possibility of salvation. Expert individuals, like doctors and lawyers, are people to whom we often defer because of their domain knowledge. And the embedded expertise in technologies allows algorithms to guide our thinking just as a person might, albeit in less noticeable ways.
