When will your transformation work be done?
At one level, strong product companies are continuously improving, so in that sense transformation is never really complete. However, there is one very meaningful milestone that matters.
In the product model, one of the product model principles is that product teams are accountable for results. It's not enough to roll out new techniques. It's not enough to train your teams. It's not enough to produce output. Product teams must produce results.
If a product team doesn't produce real results for your customers and your company, then what have you really accomplished?
This is why it's so important when discussing transformation to the product model that you always frame this work as being about delivering real results.
This is also why throughout this book we share so many stories of real innovation by companies that transformed to the product model.
In every case, these companies simply didn't have the ability to generate those results without first developing these new muscles. This is the real reason for moving to the product model.
So, when we talk about the outcome of transformation, we like to frame the discussion around results. What do you hope to be able to do once you transform that you can't do effectively today?
Because you can't predict the future, you can't say what your specific goals are for the opportunities that present themselves in the future.
