Proxy/Cache Directives

The mod_ pr oxy module adds proxy server and caching capa-

bilities to Apache, allowing documents to be fetched from

remote servers (which themselves may be proxy servers). In

practice, it may be better to deploy a dedicated proxy cache

server such as Squid (http://www.squid-cache.or g ).

A request is deemed to be a proxy request if the hostname in

the URL is not one served by the server. Proxy requests are

flagged as such during the first phase of request processing by

prefixing the URL with the string

proxy:. Directory and loca-

tion sections that apply to proxied URLs should match against

the prefixed URL. Requests can be rewritten to be proxy

requests by the mod_r ewrite module.
