CGI Scripts
The CGI interface allows applications to be launched from
web servers in a way that is language-independent and
portable between most web servers. The downside is the
overhead required to launch the CGI script for each request.
Embedded interpreters, such as mod_ perl, avoid this overhead
and provide better performance. Other solutions such as
FastCGI and SpeedyCGI provide a CGI-like environment in a
separate process and also avoid most of this overhead.
Files are regarded as CGI scripts if the handler is set to
cgi-
script, and are executed in accordance with the CGI specifi-
cation. If the suEXEC CGI wrapper is properly installed,
Apache will run scripts as the user and group specified for a
virtual host, or as the owner of a user-specific directory. Oth-
erwise, they will be run as the user and group under which
the web server child processes run.
