7.1 General considerations
One or more partitions can share input/output (I/O) hardware, but there are rules:
both rules that are imposed by the operating system and System Licensed
Internal Code (SLIC) and rules that are reasonable and just good operating
procedure. For example, it is impossible to have two or more partitions
controlling a single card slot at the same time; the hardware cannot support this
situation, nor does it make any sense to configure this situation. Because of the
way that iSeries and System i machines use mass storage, also called disk or
DASD (Direct Access Storage Device), it is seldom desirable to switch ownership
