So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Inappropriate Data Points
As mentioned above, descriptive statistics can help identify inappropriate data points
in advance. For instance, in Figure 9.1 Descriptive statistics helping to diagnose problems in initial data we see an inappropriate maximum of 55 for Satisfaction03, which is supposed to have
a maximum of 7, and a misspelled category in Size (“Bigg”).
If you are commissioning statistics it is not a bad idea to have a look at summary
data yourself. You may pick up anomalies that a statistician would not see, such as
a company size that seems bigger than anything you know about in your industry. You
could then tell the statistician to investigate. It doesn’t take that much time for
you to participate in this easy first step.
