Final Thoughts
Although this chapter isn't a comprehensive overview of everything you'll need to build your own addons, we hope you have the basics down for how all of the pieces of an addon work together. For more in-depth information on building Warcraft addons, we suggest World of Warcraft Programming by Wiley Publishing. For free, online reference information on Warcraft's API, http://www.wowprogramming.com and http://www.wowwiki.com are invaluable resources for getting started. Also, remember that you can open any third-party addon and see for yourself how the code works. Looking at the source code for well-established addons is a great way to learn best practices in addon development.
Although there is certainly a learning curve to understand how to build addons for World of Warcraft, the ability to read data in and out of the game can bring about an entirely new class of applications to your gaming experience. Imagine being able to read and write email in game, or synchronizing opponent statistics from Wowarmory.com, or checking your guild's raiding calendar directly in game, or better yet, text messaging your friends when you're online and playing so that they can join you. It's all possible, and it's a lot easier than you might think.
