Connecting remote devices with no fixed infrastructure available in their surroundings has been made possible using the same technology that portable devices use to access the internet, over mobile networks, such as GSM/GPRS, 3G, and LTE. The increasing complexity, costs, and energy requirements characterizing the devices accessing broadband mobile connectivity have increased the impact of integrating this sort of network communication in microcontroller-based embedded devices.
