Empathy is the natural ability that we all have to understand how and what someone else might be experiencing, thinking or feeling from within the other person’s frame of reference. It involves trying to recognise and understand the meaning, significance and implications of someone else’s experience, thoughts and feelings, even when they differ from your own.

In the context of emotional intelligence, when you’re being empathic, you’re aiming to understand the other person’s emotions; how they feel about a particular situation.
